The bigger challenge of creating text equivalents is deciding what the text equivalent should be. In the previous example, we used the text equivalent, “Moon orbiting planet.” However, we can take the same movie, place it in a new context and the meaning changes altogether. In the example below, the same animation is used as a graphic element on a site for Planet Burrito.
Text equivalents should focus on function as opposed to pure description. In this case, the fact that the animation shows a moon orbiting a planet is not as important as the fact that the animation is used as a visual organizer to the page. In this case, you might use the text equivalent “Planet Burrito.” This more accurately describes the purpose of the movie on the stage.
